Industrial-scale clandestine labs are no longer isolated events.
In April 2025, Europol reported the dismantling of a massive synthetic drug laboratory in Bree, Belgium, with the capacity to produce hundreds of kilos of synthetic drugs per month. The operation involved Belgian police, the Lab Dismantling Team, forensic specialists and Europol.
This highlights a key operational need: detecting production sites before they scale.
For law enforcement agencies, the technology developed within the PENTION project, an advanced vapour detection technology, will support the identification of synthetic drugs, precursors, clandestine labs and production sites through accurate chemical fingerprints. The technology could strengthen situational awareness, reduce exposure risks and support faster decision-making during investigations.
